Its possible that Karl's love for fishing began as early as the age of five.. His father took Karl and his brothers, sister and mother to Lake Simcoe almost every weekend fishing for yellow perch, sunfish and northern pike. “I started with a bobber and worm from the time I was five years old” says Karl.
At the age of 14, Karl's love for angling grew when he and a few friends skipped classes at school and spent the afternoons fishing for crappie, sunfish, largemouth bass and anything else that bit at downtown Toronto's Grenadier Pond in High Park. “I probably should have been doing homework, but its worked out ok”. Karl's always had a knack for pursuing his dreams. In high school, Karl pursued his passion for fishing with working out in the football team's weight room.
Never one to let financial considerations slow down his ambition, Karl recalls picking night crawlers in local golf courses at night and selling them to friends to pay for his fishing tackle and bus fare to regional fishing destinations.
Once school was over with, Karl utilized his newly built 225 plus pound frame to work as a door man at various nightclubs along Toronto 's busy entertainment district. This was only a pit stop on his way to fulfilling a much larger dream.
The next stop on Karl's journey was his employment driving a truck from Monday to Friday from 6 am to 6 pm to once again earn enough money to purchase his first boat and all the toys that big boys like. A new pick up truck, ATV, fishing rods, reels and a boat load of fishing gear.
While trucking, Karl began writing articles for various fishing publications, planting the roots for a career change. In 1990 Karl began his own publication known as the 'Ultimate Fishing Annual".
Working out of his basement, Karl built his publishing business from a struggling one-man business to a thriving multimedia enterprise including various titled publications, specie select Annuals, DVD library and one of North America's most watched and popular television series, EXTREME ANGLER TV, which is celebrating season twelve in 2014.
Karl, while infamous or despised in the eyes of a few, is loved and revered by many. He is a dedicated family man who is always ready to contribute to his community and donates fishing tackle and promotional items to many social media platforms and auctions, the proceeds of which are donated to worthwhile causes and the future anglers of tomorrow. At this point, Karl's riding a wave he can't control, but loving every minute of it.
With filming the show, fishing new lakes with some of the finest anglers in North America for a wide variety of species, legions of fans and an endless waitlist of new angling experiences and business opportunities, he has the enviable task of doing what he loves, spending time with his family and bracing for a long, smooth ride in his bass boat.
Is he worried that the ride might end? No. When the fame and commotion are over, he'll go back to what he loves. “I'll go back to fishing with a bobber and worm”.
